A sketch, a few reference photographs and a paragraph of notes is enough to get a quote and not enough to get a garment. The quote comes back fast because the factory has quietly filled every gap with its own defaults. Three weeks later a sample arrives that matches nobody's picture of it.
What development actually produces
A flat, dimensioned drawing with every construction detail called out. Seam types, stitch counts, trims, labels, placement measurements. A point-of-measure chart with a tolerance at every size, and a grading rule for how the pattern scales across the range.
It is boring, and it is the only document a production partner can quote against with any confidence. It should also carry revision history — a tech pack through three rounds of fit corrections needs to show what changed and why, or the fourth round restarts the argument from the first.
Where the detail actually matters
Rarely in the big things. Almost always in what nobody thought to specify.
Fabric weight and stretch percentage, because "performance fabric" is not a spec — a four-way stretch at 20% recovery and a two-way at 8% both use the name and behave nothing alike on a swing.
Colorway tolerance, because a Pantone reference without a delta-E tolerance is a suggestion. Two runs of the same navy can read differently on one rack.
Grading rules, because a fit built carefully at one size flattens across the range if the factory's defaults are allowed to decide it.
Materials decide as much as drawings
Development is not a drawing phase followed by a sourcing phase. Sampling runs through fabric bases, trims and decoration together, because a construction that works in one base fails in another and the drawing cannot tell you which.
That is why development time is real time, and why compressing it is the most expensive saving available. A rushed program is the one most likely to skip specification detail, which is backwards: compressed timelines are exactly when there is no room left to catch a fit problem in a second sample round.
What we need to start
Development starts faster with these than without them:
- A reference garment, physical rather than photographed — something to measure and cut into.
- The size range, and whether it grades like a technical fit or a relaxed one.
- Any fabric, trim or decoration already committed to, and anything already ruled out.
- The date the finished product has to exist, working backwards from it.
